Patient Support
The Ticker Club offers practical advice and moral support to all new patients, regardless of membership, both before and after surgery. This is mainly carried out through near-daily visits to all the cardiac wards and cardiac outpatient clinics by our trained patient support visitors, and by speaking to patients and their families at the pre-arranged Friday pre-op meetings. All the Club’s visitors have had some form of cardiac procedure themselves, and though these volunteers do not answer medical questions, they offer support and reassurance at a stressful time, sharing their own experience as patients.

As a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus, we were for some time unable to carry out our Hospital patient support visits in person. But, with the return of a degree of normality, these visits have once again been resumed.

Our visiting times at Wythenshawe Hospital are:
Wards F2 , F5 , F6 & Jim Quick ward: Monday pm, Tuesday pm, Wednesday am & pm, Thursday pm & Friday am.
Ward F6 (for new admissions): Sunday to Thursday afternoons
Cardiac outpatient clinics: Wednesday mornings [currently suspended]
Pre-arranged pre-op meetings for cardiac patients in the days before surgery: Friday afternoons in the cardiothoracic critical care unit (CTCCU)
Our visiting times at consultants’ outreach clinics are currently :
Tameside Hospital: alternate Tuesday mornings [currently suspended due to lack of consultant availability]

Had your heart procedure now? Feeling the benefit?
Perhaps you’d like to ‘put something back’ by joining our patient support team . . .
You could join us in helping reassure other cardiac patients and their families by becoming a ward or clinic visitor yourself. You would be given the opportunity to join an experienced visitor for ‘taster’ ward and clinic sessions, followed by joint visits for training and guidance until you feel confident in working on your own.
